Short Description

The Department of Tourism of the Ionian University was founded in 2018 and its mission is to train tourism scientists within an interdisciplinary framework, combining areas of social sciences such as business administration, economics and marketing with fields of humanities such as history, culture and geopolitical analysis.

The philosophy of the Department's curriculum examines the nature and characteristics of the tourism industry and explores how it can be promoted, managed and transformed with the support of modern management tools but also with the contribution of digital technologies. The vision of the Department of Tourism is to become an educational and research reference center that develops, composes and completes the sciences that examine tourism development.

Studies

The curriculum of the Department of Tourism focuses on the following main topics:
1. Management of Tourism Enterprises & Cultural Organizations with indicative courses: management, finance, marketing.
2. Digital Tourism with indicative courses: digital marketing, booking systems, digital applications, social media.
3. International tourism, language and law with indicative courses: travel law, intercultural communication, English, French and German.
4. Thematic tourism with indicative courses: alternative forms of tourism, cruise management.
5. Tourism & Culture with indicative courses: cultural heritage management, Mediterranean societies and cultures.
The study program lasts eight (8) academic semesters (30 ECTS per semester).

Location and Facilities

The Department of Tourism is based in Corfu at P. Vraila Armeni Street in the Kalypso building. The building has three classrooms equipped with advanced technological tools and one computer lab.

Future Plans

The Department of Tourism is planning and will operate from September 2021 the Master Program entitled "Digital Technologies in Hospitality Management and Tourism" in collaboration with the Department of Informatics of the Ionian University. Future plans include providing this MSc Program in English for attracting students all over the world.

Moreover, the Department of Tourism is planning to organize and provide an English-based vocational training program on Hospitality and Tourism Management through the Ionian University’s Lifelong Learning Center.

Summer Schools

Future plans also include organizing –in collaboration with the Department of Informatics of the Ionian University- summer (or better winter) workshops on the following topic “Digital Technologies and Innovation in Tourism Management”. The Department of Informatics had realized the first summer workshop on this topic in summer 2018.

International Collaborations

During the first two years of the Department’s operation, two (2) collaborations with European universities have already developed in the framework of the Erasmus + program for the mobility of students to strengthen the European dimension of their studies. The collaborating departments are the Department of Tourism of the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda, Portugal as well as the Department of Business Administration and Public Administration of the University of Cyprus, Republic of Cyprus. As part of the International Academic Partnership Program (IAPP) of Greece, the Department of Tourism has initiated a collaboration with the University of Alabama, in USA. More information on the outcomes of this collaboration will be released in the next period.
