Short Description

The Department of Environment of the Ionian University is located on Zakynthos island, and owns state-of-the-art scientific equipment and teaching facilities. Students can acquire a range of professional skills based on theory, laboratory teaching and field exercises. The five established research laboratories reflect the areas of staff interests and expertise:

Environmental Physics, Energy, and Environmental Biology
Mathematical Physics and Computational Statistics
Software Technology and Geoinformatics

Studies

We offer one Undergraduate (BSc) programme in Greek language: BSc Environmental Science. The program aims to offer, understanding on the processes affecting the environment and ecosystems, and a critical understanding of the technologies involved. The degree takes 8 semesters and 240 ECTS teaching units to complete. Students can complete part of their degree in other European Universities using the Erasmus+ student exchange programme and can obtain professional experience via an optional scheme of practical training in the workplace. We offer PhD Research programs in English. We are also part of the Erasmus + Teaching and Research network, and we accept English speaking students at our undergraduate studies. Our two MSc taught programs also accept foreign students:
1. New Technologies in Environmental Education and Sustainable Development
2. Preservation & Management of Cultural Heritage

Location and Facilities

The Department of Environment is located in the city of Zakynthos and it has a state-of-the-art building built in 2012, with a total covered area of 5500 m2, in addition to c. 3000 m2 peripheral operating areas.

Power Python Summer School is a summer school in the form of programming laboratory courses for advanced subjects and powerful language libraries, with emphasis on data analysis and processing.

[2] Information and Communication Technologies in the Promotion and Management of Natural and Cultural Resources for Tourism Development

The purpose of the Summer School is to introduce participants to the information and communication technologies that can be used to highlight, promote and manage the natural and cultural environment. The total duration of the Summer School was two (2) weeks, six (6) hours per day.

In collaboration with the Universities of Aegean and Piraeus, the Marine Park of Zakynthos, and tutors participation from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, and the Universities of Algarve, Cardiff, and Lille-1. The educational lectures were given in English.
