The Department of Informatics operates since the academic year 2004-05, and it deals with theoretical and applied Informatics. The Department aims to cultivate and promote Information Systems and Computer Science, with emphasis on theory and applications of Informatics in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as in the design, development, operation and management of information systems. Also, to provide specialized knowledge regarding the application of Information Systems and Computer Science in supporting various social, administrative and financial activities.

The Department offers a curriculum with two orientations. The Information Systems orientation deals with the efficient and effective use of information and communication technologies in organizations for the achievement of competitive advantage and quality in the provision of products and services. The Humanities and Social Sciences orientation focuses on the impact of modern technologies on human thought, perception, work and creativity, social relations, education, science, political and cultural action, and the impact of human presence, intellect, and behavior in the science of Informatics.

The Department organizes educational activities for the cultivation and promotion of Informatics including conferences, workshops and summer schools. Summers schools especially, are a unique opportunity for new and established researchers and scientists from around the world to participate in state-of-the-art research and teaching activities, and to exchange innovative ideas and methods, while exploring the beautiful island of Corfu. The summer schools that have been organized by the Department include summer schools in Environmental Informatics, Educational Technologies, Digital Technologies and Innovation in Tourism Entrepreneurship, Robotics and Programming, Information Communication Security, Neuroscience and Mathematics Education, and others. The Department also organize and actively participate in a variety of groups and events related to professional careers, arts, computer science and entertainment, such as TEDxIonianUniversity, Mindspace at Corfu, IonianCTF, Ionian IEEE Student Branch, etc.
The Department organizes international conferences, workshops, events, and speeches focused on various topics related to the science of Informatics. Examples of conferences, workshops and events that the Department has organized or organizes include the Genetics, Geriatrics and Neurodegenerative Research, the International Workshop on Semantic and Social Media Adaptation & Personalization, the South-East Europe Design Automation, Computer Engineering, Computer Networks and Social Media Conference, the Conference on Informatics in Education, the Mediterranean Conference on Information Systems, the Special Session on Smart Tourism at the 12th International Conference on Information, Intelligence, Systems and Applications, and others. The Department further has fifteen active collaborations with higher education institutions in Europe for the mobility of students and teaching and administrative personnel via the Erasmus+ program. The collaborations include the countries of Cyprus, Norway, Portugal, Italy, Rumania, Spain, Finland, Malta, Germany, Croatia and Latvia.
