Studies

The Ionian University is a dynamic, multi-island institution with a lively research, scientific and teaching presence, in Greece as well as internationally. Founded in 1984, in the historic city of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, today it consists of five schools and twelve departments, which operate on four islands (seven Departments in Corfu, three in Kefalonia, one in Zakynthos and one in Lefkada).

The Ionian University is the proud academic successor of the Ionian Academy, the first modern Greek University, which was founded and operated in Corfu from 1824 to 1864, until the Union of the Ionian Islands with the Greek state. Today, the university headquarters are in Corfu, and the historic building of the Ionian Academy houses the Rectorate, while lectures, graduations, conferences, workshops and concerts are held in its ceremony hall.

The originality of the subjects and curricula of the academic departments of the Ionian University (in the fields of humanities and social sciences, sciences and economics but also art and creation), some of which are unique in Greece, is remarkable (e.g., the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation, the Department of Archives, Librarianship and Museology, the Department of Sound and Visual Arts).

This originality is complemented by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. For example, many of the curricula are based on the interdisciplinary approach and the combination of science and art. The modern subjects correspond and adapt to professional reality, thus building the foundations for a successful professional career.

Our university graduates also have brilliant academic and research prospects. The Ionian University, having a strong educational and research presence in the national and international academic and research area, cultivates in its graduates the value of Science and equips them for the continuation of their studies in the second and third cycle of studies (postgraduate programs, preparation of a doctoral dissertation, postdoctoral research). The Ionian University has 18 Postgraduate Programs.

Adhering to the principles and values of science, research, quality innovation, continuous improvement of teaching and infrastructure, academic freedom, exchange of views and internationalization, the Ionian University takes advantage of the potential and challenges of our changing times.

Among the goals of the Ionian University is the multilevel coverage of students’ needs and the fulfillment of their expectations through a high level of teaching and constantly improving infrastructures. Classes, workshops, the academic library are places of study, learning and dialogue. The students of our institution form the central reference point of the educational function. Studies are of high quality, aimed at fulfilling all learning objectives set in each case. In this context, joint activities are developed (e.g., guest speaker lectures, seminars, assignments) in between the departments, mainly at school level.

Finally, it is worth noting that scholarships of excellence are awarded in all educational cycles (undergraduate / postgraduate level of studies).

Accreditation

The Certification and Evaluation Council of the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE) has with a recent decision (May 7, 2021) ranked the Ionian University in the highest category of full compliance with the principles of the HAHE Quality Standard and the Quality Assurance Principles of the European Higher Education Area (ESG).

The award of this highest level of certification, which is given for a period of four years (until May 2025), demonstrates the commitment of the Ionian University in achieving high quality studies and research. At the same time, it is the result of collective effort, careful planning and investment in work, energy and academic vision to shape the institution's further qualitative and competitive course.

Extroversion, Culture, Participation

The Ionian Islands are a crossroads of cultures and a region of great natural beauty, with a rich history and an important and multidimensional cultural tradition and presence (in art, music, literature, etc.).

Operating on this cultural background, the Ionian University places a high importance on extroversion, and has created an important international academic and research profile, being a partner in many academic networks and collaborating with other Higher Education Institutions and research centers on a European and international level, and participating in ca. 250 bilateral and LLP Erasmus academic agreements.

The traditionally open and outgoing character of the Ionian University also expresses itself on the local cultural and artistic scene with numerous events, concerts, recitals, lectures, festivals, exhibitions, seminars and international conferences, aspiring to offer our students education and culture as an integral part of their everyday university life.
